Chapter 2: Wild Elegy

The Stare

Close-up black and white portrait of a baboon showing detailed facial features and fur texture.

I spent a fortune

on a ticket to the great circus.

The wizard used his magic on me—

turned all the memories I carried

into wild animals,

even the long-forgotten ones

from my past lives.

The animals stare at me.

Their stares become a giant mirror,

clear as the surface of Lake Manyara.

In it I can see what I am

and what I once was,

until thousands of flamingos

stir up the water.

The stares never leave.

I just need to wait, patiently,

for the mirror to settle

and show me who I will become.
