Chapter 4. I See America

Rocky Road
I remember that I passed out
on the Brokenheart Boulevard to paradise,
passing through the Death Valley.
When I woke, the sky was vast and full of stars.
The moon was rising over the red desert.
My nose bled from the suffocating dry air.
I kept driving—
until my car got stuck in a sand dune.
I spent all my money on a tow.
Luckily, I still had
the desert of Rocky Road
for the rest of my trip.
Finally, dawn breaks.
In the far distance,
a town glows in a warm golden hue,
lights shimmering,
a huge McDonald’s sign floating in the air.
And I whisper, “I See America.”
